An annual publication brought together the key results from recent research and statistics that focus on the treatment of women in the criminal justice system. Between 1993 and 2001 the average population of women in prison in England and Wales rose by 140 per cent, as against 46 per cent for men.

Research found that 55 per cent of women who are in prison for the first time have an identifiable mental illness; and that, of those with a mental health problem, 83 per cent suffer from depression.
